Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the official, following the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
