Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
